Domain Pricing

Customers often ask, “If the domain only costs £10, why is there an extra charge?” The reality is that securing a .gov.uk domain for council use involves a lot more than the advertised base cost. Here’s a breakdown of what’s involved:

  1. Application and Documentation
When we receive your request, we start by completing an official registration form. This includes details about the council, the clerk, the domain’s intended use, and funding sources, all of which is essential for approval by Central Government. Once submitted, we await a registration code necessary to proceed further.
  2. Domain Purchase with Nominet
With the registration code in hand, we then purchase the domain through Nominet, the official registry for .gov.uk domains. This step also requires us to register the domain specifically to your council’s clerk.
  3. DNS Setup
We configure the Domain Name Service (DNS), which acts as an internet "phone book," connecting your domain name to your website’s IP address. To ensure proper setup, we often coordinate with your existing host to manage connections for both your website and email.
  4. National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) Registration
For added security, we register your domain with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). This means NCSC actively monitors the domain, helping protect it from potential malicious activity on your behalf.

As you can see, a .gov.uk domain involves more than the upfront cost; it requires time, technical setup, and multiple services to ensure everything is secure and fully functional. If you’d like to learn more, please visit see our domains page.
